| Today is Wednesday, the 1st of April, 2020. When I took this picture two years ago, in San Miguel de Allende, I had no idea as to how --- or if --- I would ever use it. Today, in many ways, I can identify with this anonymous doll that's been hung out to dry. The doll had not been discarded or rejected... in fact, quite the opposite. It was valued enough to be cleaned so that it could be reunited with its owner. Our travels are over for the time being. We are in the process of cleaning our world so that we can reconnect with those we love and, eventually, resume some of the activities that we really enjoyed. For me, April 1st is a date of embarking on new things and setting aside old things. Twenty-one years ago, on this date, Rob McCann and I incorporated Tetraplex, a small, Internet server and software engineering company that would develop creative solutions to a wide range of problems. Our work took us across Canada and the United States, from Calgary to Silicon Valley; from Ottawa to Chicago. We were the first to develop and implement the concept of the captive portal which is used in Internet hot spots around the world today. We developed some of the provisioning techniques that allow cellphones to be updated remotely. Here, at home, we were at the forefront of developing the first online, problem-based learning tools for use in the training of medical doctors. |
